Why do I have them and what can I do about them?

There are two main causes….

  1. Genetics (thank you mum & dad! 🙋‍♀️)
  1. Oily skin. Approximately 80% of the UK population has this skin type.

Due to this, one of the main causes of enlarges pores is excessive oil production. When your sebaceous glands produce an abundance of oil, your skin’s pores will expand to accommodate it. Although many factors can contribute to overactive oil glands, it’s mostly considered to be genetic.

Cleanse…..🧴It’s important to make sure you cleanse your skin morning and night to remove excess oils, makeup and dirt from your skin. Not doing this can lead to blocked pores and blackheads.

Exfoliate….🧽A person with oily skin should exfoliate once or twice a week. Exfoliating helps to remove things from the pores that can block them.

Look for exfoliating products with spherical water soluble beads. This will ensure that micro-tears don’t occur to the skin and are also better for the environment.

It is important not to exfoliate more than twice a week, however. Exfoliating too frequently with products that contain salicylic acid or alcohol can dry out the skin.

Salicylic acid……🧪is your best friend my oily sisters! It has bacteriostatic actions and frees enlarged pores from their sebaceous content. This creates an unfavourable environment for bacterial growth and reduces the chances of acne lesion formation.

Moisturise…..💦The idea of moisturising oily skin may seem counterintuitive. However, it can help to reduce pore enlargement.

Although moisturising cleansers may clog the pores, in contrast, moisturising lotions used after washing and patting the skin dry are beneficial.

This is because moisturisers hydrate and soften the skin. This allows the sebum to penetrate deeper into the skin, rather than sit in the pores on the surface.

In this way, moisturising prevents pores becoming clogged with oil, reducing their appearance.

💁🏼‍♀️We recommend water-based moisturising products that are ‘non-comedogenic’. An ideal choice is Epionce Renewal Lite Facial Lotion which can be used both morning and night.

Oil free SPF… ☀️something we hear a lot in the clinic is how so many of you have trouble with sun screens causing breakouts.

💁‍♀️Choosing an oil free formula such as Heliocare 360 Oil Free will allow you to benefit from the protection of a factor 50 without the risk of breakouts. Also available in two skin tones, light and bronze!

Apply a clay mask…..🧖🏽‍♀️Using a clay mask once or twice a week can help to remove oil from the pores. They act like a magnet to the dirt, drawing it out of the pores. Regular use can prevent pores from becoming enlarged, and reduce their appearance.

💁🏾‍♀️We recommend ZO Skin Health Sulphur Masque it’s clay-based formula treats and prevents acne whilst aiding hydration to combat dryness.

Retinol…..Retinoids not only improve wrinkles and reduce pigmentation,  they also work to improving acne and tightening pores. This is the result of its ability to increase your skin’s collagen production, while simultaneously decreasing its oil production, which leads to smoother skin, fewer breakouts and blackheads, and tighter pores.

Be aware that retinol can be irritating at first (you’ll likely have week of dry, flaky skin after you initially start it) but stick with it or it doesn’t work!

💁🏼‍♀️We recommend you speak to a professional skin clinic such as ours, as many of these products are only available on prescription.

🏵Professional treatments we recommend:

Chemical peels are a great way to kick-start your ‘war on pores’!

💁🏻‍♀️We recommend: Obagi Blue Peel Radiance – a salicylic acid based peel with little to no time. We recommend a course of 3 to 6. A great treatment to have before a course of professional microneedling which will also help products to penetrate deeper into the skin.

Microneedling – this is either carried out with a handheld roller or an electronic pen device. Micro-needling helps to reduce the appearance of enlarged pores whilst improving fine lines, wrinkles and scaring. Hyaluronic acid skin -boosters can be added to this treatment to boost skin hydration and radiance. As not all devices are of equal quality, we recommend you seek a professional service to achieve the best results.

💁🏽‍♀️We recommend an electronic pen such as eDS Dermastamp for the face. This gives the practitioner complete control of the depth and pressure of the needles and eliminates the risk of micro-tears to the skin.

⚠️Please note that new regulations within the beauty industry requires practitioners to obtain a prescription for any numbing cream used before microneedling treatments. A face-to-face consultation with a healthcare practitioner with prescribing rights is now a legal requirement.
